How should I care for a finished quilt?
Updated: Nov 19
So you've finished (or have been gifted) a quilt! Awesome! Now how do you look after it? (Bonus printable care instructions for gifting with your quilts)
Quilts take a lot of time and love to make, so it only makes sense you want to ensure it stays in top shape. Here's my 5 tips for you to ensure you can continue to love it for many years to come!
Gentle Washing: Use a front-loading washing machine or hand wash to avoid agitating the fabric. Use cold water and a mild detergent to preserve colours and fabrics. Bonus- 1/2 a cup of vinegar in the wash will get rid of any musty odours and keep the colours vibrant.
Avoid Excessive Sunlight: Store your quilt in a cool, dark place when not in use. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade colours and weaken the fabric.
Spot Clean When Necessary: For small stains, spot clean with a damp cloth and a mild detergent instead of washing the entire quilt. If you find your quilt smelling a little musty, popping it outside in the shade on a warm day over a clothes airer will help!
Use a Quilt Rack or Fold Neatly: Display your quilt on a rack or fold it neatly to prevent creasing and wear. Avoid hanging it on a clothesline for extended periods.
Regularly Rotate and Air Out: If displayed, rotate the quilt occasionally and air it out to prevent mustiness and maintain freshness.
Use your quilt!: Trust me- nothing breaks a quilters heart (*ahem* my heart) when a quilt has been gifted to hear the recipient doesn't use their quilt for they're afraid of ruining it! Quilts aren't made to live in linen cupboards, they're made for cuddling under while reading a book, picnics in the sun, blanket forts and couch naps. Use your quilt!
